Friday, October 2, 2026. Five games. The Whiteboard picks the home team in all five. Two are clear reads: Vegas at 69.4 percent and Carolina at 62.0 percent. The other three are close to even: Winnipeg at 53.9 percent, and Detroit and Dallas at 52.9 percent each. In Detroit and Dallas, the visiting team carries the higher team score, and home ice is what tips the pick.

Rangers at Red Wings, 6:30 PM

Starters: Dylan Garand (NYR) vs John Gibson (DET)

The Whiteboard's pick: Detroit, 52.9 percent. Team scores: Detroit 54.1, Rangers 55.2. The Rangers rate 1.1 points higher, and the 4.2-point home-ice edge makes Detroit the pick. On skaters alone, Detroit would be 51.4 percent.

Goaltending. John Gibson carries a 54.9 goalie grade, which rises to 57.4 tonight because of how his rush saves fit Detroit's defense. Dylan Garand has no goalie grade yet: there is no NHL goaltending sample for him, so his goaltending counts at the Whiteboard's default for unknown goaltending, 45.

Where each team is stronger. Detroit's forward group rates 59.1 to the Rangers' 50.3. The Rangers' defense rates 64.4 to Detroit's 43.5, the widest gap on the ice in this game. The power-play unit values are nearly even, 67.9 for Detroit and 66.8 for the Rangers, and the Rangers' penalty kill rates 54.6 to Detroit's 50.2.

Players the Whiteboard likes. For Detroit, Moritz Seider has a 94th-percentile Drive rating with elite PP quarterback, Matchup defender, and Play driver tags. Alex DeBrincat (90th percentile) carries an elite Dual threat tag, and Lucas Raymond (89th) carries elite Whistle winner and Dual threat tags. For the Rangers, Adam Fox has a 93rd-percentile Drive rating with elite PP quarterback and Play driver tags, Pavel Dorofeyev rates in the 90th percentile, and Sean Durzi (85th) carries an elite Play driver tag.

Best chemistry. Detroit's DeBrincat, Copp, and Raymond line scores 72 for line chemistry. The Rangers' top pair, Vladislav Gavrikov and Adam Fox, scores 76, the best unit in this game. Detroit's second and third pairs score 31 and 33.

The risk against the pick. The Rangers have the higher team score, so the pick rests entirely on home ice. And Garand's 45 is a default, not a measurement. If the Rangers' goaltending were credited at their graded goalies' level instead, Detroit would still be the pick, at 50.5 percent.

Capitals at Hurricanes, 7:00 PM

Starters: Logan Thompson (WSH) vs Brandon Bussi (CAR)

The Whiteboard's pick: Carolina, 62.0 percent. Team scores: Carolina 73.0, Washington 63.9. On skaters alone, Carolina would be 65.3 percent.

Goaltending. This is Washington's edge. Logan Thompson carries an 81.2 goalie grade (80.8 tonight after the rush-save fit). Brandon Bussi carries a 62.2 grade, which falls to 58.7 tonight: the Whiteboard expects his rush saves to be tested more behind Carolina's lineup.

Where Carolina is stronger. Everywhere among the skaters. Carolina's forwards rate 77.1 to Washington's 69.7, its defense 71.6 to 48.6, its power play 76.4 to 67.0, and its penalty kill 71.8 to 61.9.

For Carolina, Sebastian Aho has a 94th-percentile Drive rating with an elite Dual threat tag, and Jaccob Slavin (94th) carries elite Puck driver, Stick thief, and Suppressor tags. Nikolaj Ehlers (84th) carries elite Puck driver and Green light tags, and Jordan Staal (83rd) elite Puck driver and Faceoff specialist tags. For Washington, Jordan Kyrou has a 98th-percentile Drive rating, Aliaksei Protas (95th) carries an elite Dual threat tag, and Tom Wilson (93rd) carries elite Lunch pail, Play driver, and Trigger man tags.

Best chemistry. Washington's Tuch, Dubois, and Wilson line scores 91, the second-best line of the night. Carolina's Hall, Stankoven, and Blake line scores 85, and all three of Carolina's top lines score 75 or better.

The risk against the pick. Washington's 22-point goaltending edge (80.8 to 58.7) and its 91 top line. Carolina wins this on depth: its defense and both special-teams units rate well ahead.

Bruins at Jets, 8:00 PM

Starters: Jeremy Swayman (BOS) vs Stuart Skinner (WPG)

The Whiteboard's pick: Winnipeg, 53.9 percent. Team scores: Winnipeg 53.6, Boston 53.5. On skaters alone, Winnipeg would be 58.3 percent. The goaltending matchup pulls this game almost all the way back to even.

Goaltending. Jeremy Swayman carries a 78.3 goalie grade, rising to 80.8 tonight with the rush-save fit. Stuart Skinner carries a 42.5 grade (42.1 tonight). That 38.7-point gap is the largest goaltending difference of the night.

For Boston, Hampus Lindholm has an 83rd-percentile Drive rating with an elite Heavy lifting tag. David Pastrnak (78th) carries elite Playmaker, Green light, and Dual threat tags, JJ Peterka (78th) an elite Trigger man tag, and Morgan Geekie elite Sniper and Trigger man tags.

Best chemistry. Boston's Peterka, Elias Lindholm, and Pastrnak line scores 68, and Boston's first power-play unit scores 66. Winnipeg's best line, Connor, Scheifele, and Perfetti, scores 52, and its top pair, Morrissey and DeMelo, scores 32.

The risk against the pick. The team scores are 0.1 apart. Swayman's grade nearly erases Winnipeg's skater edge, and Boston's top line has the better chemistry.

The risk against the pick. The goaltending: Dostal's grade is 27.6 points above Hart's. Read Anaheim's defense number with care: four of its six dressed defensemen have no rating yet and count at the Whiteboard's 40th-percentile default.

Standouts

  • Vegas's top line is the best unit on the board tonight. Barbashev, Eichel, and Stone score 96 for line chemistry, with Drive ratings in the 96th, 100th, and 99th percentiles. Vegas also carries the highest power-play value of the ten teams, 83.4.
  • Carolina has the deepest skater group. Its forwards, defense, power play, and penalty kill all rate above 71, and all three of its top lines score 75 or better for chemistry. Carolina and Vegas are the only two teams tonight above 70 in all four skater areas.
